Hello! The band break will be coming to an end soon, so here's a few things for you guys to take note of.

Firstly, please be reminded that the next practice will be on 20th June. Reporting time will be 8.45am in Uniform. Please do bring back your instruments and training materials. Oh, not to forget, $10 and the forms for the band camp!!

Secondly, do attend the next few practices! A reminder from Mr Wong.

To the Sec 1s, please bring $15 for your band shirts.

Lastly, for the camp,

Packing List!

- Band Shirts/PE T-shirts

- Shirts (At least 1 dark coloured shirt)

- PE Pants/Cullottes/Pants

- Undergarments

- School shoes and school socks!!

- Sandals/Slippers (for bathing use only)

- Band materials (files, manuscript books, method books, theory worksheets, pencil) *Theory WILL BE conducted. So juniors, please take note :)

Hello.

The band room will be open on Thursday, 9th June. From 10am to 12pm. Please make sure that the seniors and juniors turn up for individual practice or sectionals to sharpen up on the new songs and basics. *Sec 1s, we will be taking your sizes for the band shirt. So please come. And bring $15 along. ***Sec 3 seniors must attend this practice as much as possible to discuss about the camp.

And as you know there's a band camp coming up so please be reminded to pay $10 and get your forms signed ASAP.

It is eligible for only Sec 1s, 2s and 3s.

Content of application: scales, a choice piece and sight-reading.

there is a chalet (COSTA SANDS RESORT) plus bbq on 1st 2nd and 3rd april. (3d2n)

however, if you guys prefer to have it on 8, 9, 10 april, do let JUNE know.
but then, you have to realise that it is super duper frigging near SYF date.
both dates are on FRI, SAT and SUN.
BBQ will take place either on fri evening or sat evening.

please confirm with either your SL/JIAEN/JUNE that you're able to make it by MONDAY (28 MARCH).
(THE MORE PEOPLE THERE ARE, THE CHEAPER THE COST WILL BE!!)

the maximum cost will be $15 (inclusive of chalet and food).

Hey Band!

If you're still not aware, the time left is not much!

You guys still have many more things to

work and solve. Work out the details; such as articulation and

rhythm.

Seniors:

You know pretty well where and what problems

your juniors and making. Help them to change and correct them.

Band is about teamwork, work together to have things done

and solve. This way, the band will sound cleaner

and neater.

Don't forget to encourage your juniors, its probably their 1st time

taking part in such a competition. Make use of precious time

during sectionals and individual prac.

Juniors:

If you have any unclear/unfamiliar parts you dont know,

ask your seniors/tutors. I'm sure they would be glad to help you.

Don't think that your seniors will always be there to cover up

for you.

They will leave one day and now its the time to learn to be

independent. Make sure you know every single part

of your songs, practice to achieve perfection.

I know all these are easier said then done, but i want

to see every single one of you working hard.

Its the last lap alr, you have come such a long way,

and its just a couple of days left!

Persevere on, and you guys and do it.

EVERYONE OF YOU IS IMPORTANT TO THE BAND,

Hello band,
I bet everybody know what mr wong is focusing today.
PULSE, INTONATION.

We all know die fledermaus need alot more work,
its now time to revise back whatever had been taught
to us, be it from mr wong, mr chan or mr sukit.

Most importantly, we need to have a common pulse.
Practice with the metronome, get the pulse correct then we
can start solving problems .
For a start, sing your part with the metronome.

Vivo: 160 BPM
Poco piu mosso: 164BPM

For the slow movement, intonation problems are easy
to spot. Mr Wong has alr pointed out the parts that are
probed to have intonation problems, please do take note.

make good use of the time, learn the scales that are used
in die fledermaus;
Ab major, F major, Bb major, Bb minor, Eb major, Db major

Lastly, this is the video mr wong was talking about,

Now that we had finished filming our drill video,

you can now all put all your focus on the

2 main song for SYF; Die Fledermaus & Memories of Friendship.

We have about 2 more months left before SYF and

we all know time is running out.

Whatever medal you people want is really up to YOU to decide!

Its time to FOCUS on what exactly we really want to achieve.

A SILVER? OR A GOLD? OR EVEN HIGHER?

Please, if you people are willing to work hard,

we're sure that every single one of you can do our band proud!

No matter what, we're all in this together!

As you all know SYF is nearing, i hope everyone

will work hard towards our goal.

We all want to maintain the gold we obtained, but you

know its not easy and it not only take consistent hard work

but the effort of every single one of you.

Focus during mainband, and stop all the unnecessary

chatterings. Take down the parts that you and your section

have difficulties playing and solve all these problems

during sectionals.

Spent your sectional's time wisely, SLs plan your

sectionals beforehand, know what to do, make goals for each

sectionals and make sure you can achieve them. We don't

have anymore time to waste, so don't go sectionals

empty-minded!

We don't have much time left before SYF!

LET US ALL WORK HARD TOWARDS OUR GOLD!

a rather wordy post, but its a MUST read. so hang on yeah~

during the band break [which i know everyone is looking forward to], 5 sectionals must be held in total! and that's th minimum number!
WHY?!
'cause 2 days to settle Die Fled, 1 day for march blue sky, 1 day for believe, 1 more for set piece!
and if your section is really, CMI, go for more! :D
and there's not enough time for full band, so do cooperate with your SLs!

HOW TO RUN SECTIONALS?!
each sectional, run through 30 mins of basics, minimum 15 mins,
if you wish to spend more time on pieces.
*remember, you're not supposed to play any wrong notes for basics!*
5 mins for tuning, both individual and section wise!
for the rest of the time, SETTLE problems in pieces.
however, do give short breaks once in a while (:

before sectionals:
plan out what you want to solve,
list the problems out, then the solution.
mr wong, mr chan, mr sukit have gave us and suggested to us various ways of solving difficult problems.
SO USE THEM!

SLs, please do take note of these few points.

start practicing all the istana pieces [just in case you all haven started]
they are:
1. march blue sky
2. deep purple
3. die fledermaus
4. fairytale
5. coming thru th rye
6. oye como va
7. lady marmalade, with ACTIONS.
8. sock hop.

also, do go through with your section whatever mr wong has told you.
i believe you have written them in your scores/manuscript book.
if your juniors are unsure of any parts, repeat over and over again.
try your best to help them :D
the only way to solve problems is to start slow and keep practicing.

at least, ensure your sec 1s know the notes to the simpler pieces.

if there is remaining time left, try to go through the basics and make sure that the 10 points ++ are written in your whole sections' manuscript book. both me and jiaen are checking it!

lastly, try to achieve perfect attendance for your section.
yes, i know its very tough. but still, this week is very essential in order for istana performance to be a success.

Especially people that are having solos,

PRACTISE !

Don't forget your basics when you all are playing your pieces.

Apply them in your pieces !

The 2 most basic things, things you should nv forget.

The bandroom will be open tmr and on thursday.

Its a good opportunity to practice the part that you are unsure of.

WELL DONE LAST NIGHT!
You guys did a really great job.

Next band practice is on Tuesday, report at 2.15pm right after upper sec lessons end. Elections for new committee! Excited? I know I am! I'm sure you guys will still keep the band going on strong without us seniors (Sec 4's & 5). A longer post coming up soon, after we OFFICIALLY STEP DOWN and don't have to report to band anymore. -Cup. LOL.

-Band shirts

-Shirts
( Black would be best, feel free to bring extra, can bring PE Shirts too)

-Pants/Culottes/PE Shorts

-Undergarments

-School shoes

-Sandals/slippers ( Bathing use only )

-School socks

-Concert Attire
( This includes your make up, black stockings for girls, black socks for guys, and etc.
This includes your shoes too.
To check what's the concert attire feel free to ask Nicholas or Me)

-Toiletries ( Toothbrush, toothpaste, towel, boady soap, shampoo etc. )

-Training items. ( REMEMBER to bring your instrument (for those who brought home), files, method books, excercise books, etc. )
*Take note, do bring your excercise books and theory items if you have any CAUSE THEORY WILL BE CONDUCTED.
:)

*Take note that all items mentioned above must be enough for 3 days.
I don't know how many shirts/pants you'll need (Some want to bring more, some want to bring less, so just bring what you think it's enough) Also do bring enough undergarments ( Extra also can!! ) Cause if not enough, who are you going to borrow from? LOL. Flip it inside out? haha. Gross -.-

A few have been asking me the same question so I'll like to clarify this. Those who want to wear FBT shorts or anything that short, you can only wear them when you go to sleep. You are not allowed to wear them during practices, as for shirts only pe shirts and black tee shirts are allowed for practices, home shirts can only be worn when you go to sleep. Also for practices during the day, you can wear your own home shorts, however, it must be knee length or longer. Those who are still unclear can contact me :)

Optional Items:

Items not to bring:

-Electronic gadgets ( PSP, handphones, Mp3, DS etc. )
*Items will be confiscated and only returned when the camp ends*

Supper will be provided, unless you eat as much as ~ ( Fill in yourself ) you wouldn't need to bring extra food.
Food will be confiscated and you will see it in my tummy~

Anyway, Tanjong Katong Band is having a concert this November 29th at the Esplanade. They achieved a Gold Award for this year's SYF Central Judging. Hello Band!

Here is the band schedule for the whole of September and October for those who haven't gotten the schedule. Please take one copy of the band schedule during the next band practice. Although next week is the September Holidays, it is important for us to have band practices. There are quite a number of practices to attend during one week and each practice is rather long, but please do not use band as an excuse for not completing your homework/E-Learning/Home Based Learning okay? :)

Hellos everyone,

Firstly... HAPPY TEACHER'S DAY!!

Please take note that there will be a teacher's day celebration for the teachers at 2.35 tomorrow in the canteen.
Do tell your other band members about it!

Everyone is expected to come even though it's for a while.

If you don't come, you'll be at a loss because there's... _ _ _ _ !!

There will be band practice tomorrow for the seniors only.
Compulsory for all seniors to attend band practice.
Juniors do not need to come for tomorrow's practice.

Hello Band,
its been a long time since we had practices and
I hope you are at least practicing at home :)

Anyway just to update you all with the news.

Band practices stopped until further notice

National Day is cancelled

As you all know Singapore has increasing number of Influenza A (H1N1) confirmed cases and the school is trying to decrease our chances of getting/spreading the virus. Thus CCA has to be stopped until further notice. The reason CCA is stopped is because the school doesn't want us to gather in big groups as there is a high possibility of spreading the virus. Although we may not have the virus, its good to play safe and avoid such gatherings. The school will not be having National Day celebrations like the previous years as we are not allowed to gather in big groups.

Paragon performance cancelled

For the seniors, your performance at Paragon is cancelled as the school does not want you to engage in such gatherings due to the spreading virus.
I know many of you will be dissappointed as many things have to be cancelled due to the H1N1 virus, but I hope you make full use of it. Make sure you practice on your basics and don't forget them. Also, figure out and work on your training pieces.

On a different note, Philharmonic Winds will be having a performance at Paragon tomorrow. Everyone is encouraged to go. Also, its free! You just have to pay for transport ;) Also, I heard they might be playing Tong Hua and also have a Saxophone ensemble. So, why waste the chance? :D

Here's a letter from Miss Tham to the band:

Dear Band,

Today your teachers and I made the painful decision to cancel the band camp, which was to take place in the next few days.

This decision was made to protect you from the rapidly growing local transmission of the H1N1 flu virus. Some Singaporeans caught the virus when they attended large gatherings such as church camps or parties and perhaps one person there already had the virus. It is in such situations that the probability of contracting the virus is high because you have sustained contact with other people. Those who performed at SYF this year might remember the band gradually falling sick with flu just a week before Judging Day. What did we do? We cancelled band practice for that day and told all of you to go home and rest. It was also a measure on our part to stop the virus from spreading.

We understand the deep disappointment within many (some?) of you because the annual June camp is meant to fulfill three main objectives: to allow the juniors a better sense of what being in the Coral Concert Band is like, to prepare our repertoire for our performances in the second half of the year and of course, the new band committee will get to show what they are made of during this camp.

We apologise unreservedly to the organizing committee because we are sure they have put in a lot of effort, brain work and leg work for this camp. We are sorry that we would not be able to see you show what you are capable of in the next few days. We are sorry that we have had to let go of a chance for the band to bond. We are also sorry that we have had to take away precious practice time from you. We also apologise to Mr Wong for he has prepared a lot for this camp. When school re-opens, we’ll discuss how we can incorporate some of the camp materials into our practices. All of your effort is definitely not wasted.

Your section leaders will (would have) contacted you about the cancellation of the camp. If your parents have any questions, please ask Ming Xuan for my number and get them to call me, please. Tomorrow, you are also to take your instruments home to practise. Ming Xuan will provide you with a time in line with either Ms Chan or Ms Shariffa’s schedule. Please note you have to PRACTISE for a substantial number of hours and not let your instrument lay in one corner of your room for the remainder of the holidays. We trust you to do the right thing.

We hope you will understand our reasons behind this decision.

In the meantime, stay safe and practise good hygiene!

Hello band!

Speech day performance was great! WELL DONE BAND!
With more practice, I'm sure it can be better :D

Today marks the last offical performance for all

sec 4/5 members of the band.

Thank you graduating members for all dedications, hardwork

blood, sweat, tears you've put in for the band.

Our efforts finally paid off isn't it?

Throughout this one year, we can see the band improving tremendously.

We've all been through ups and downs as one band, one big family

without anyone being left behind or backing out.

Last year, we started out as a very small band with only 45 members.

We were the ones enduring, and wanting to achieve greater heights.

And finally, all our efforts and hardwork were paid off!

Every single one of you played an important part in the band.

Also, we will definitely not forget the times when we were at KL,

enjoying yet training so hard for what we are now.

This really bonded us even closer!

And SYF, was the one which we've all worked so hard for,

and we've finally achieved a gold award!

However, maintaining a gold is even harder.

It's time for us to let go and let the younger ones take over.

For the sec 2s, you're no longer known as "JUNIORS" anymore.

It's time for all of you to shine and teach the newer batches well.

You all are the ones who're going to be the pillars of the band

for the next SYF in year 2011!

JIA YOU and we definitely believe in every single one of you!

And for the sec 3s, you all are the ones going to be the most

senior members in the band already.

Time to be more decisive in whatever you do cause

the future of the band lies in these decisions.

Today, everydone did great!
It was the most emotional performance for a lot of us, yah?
That's why it was so nice,

Hello band.
For those who have the least idea when our SYF date is,
it's on the 4th day, 2nd of april.
Which also means that we have less than ONE MONTH
before SYF! Do you all see the urgency NOW?
To be exact, ITS 30 MORE DAYS TO SYF!

Band, we really hope to see you all working extremely hard.
It's just 10 more days before we set off for our KL trip.

I guess everyone heard what Mr Wong said today
about our exchange last Saturday already right?
PLEASE DO IMPROVE ON ALL THOSE POINTS.
For the good points,
DO NOT get too complacent okay.
You people should know this is NOT ENOUGH.
We can always improve to be even better!

Everyone have done their best for the exchange programme.
Though there are weaknesses here and there but we will learn from it yeahh? SYF is just a few weeks away, lets work hard together :)

Anyway a reminder to all.

- consent form for the KL trip
- $27 dollar for our SYF uniform (try to give me the exact amount)

Dear band,
I think this is a time where we got to set some things right.
THERE'S ONLY ABOUT 8 MORE WEEKS TO SYF.
Notice how short time is?
Count the number of band practices we have before syf.
Don't you all think that it's time to work hard now?
What medal you guys want to achieve,
is really up to all of you to decide okay.
Please, don't let us repeat this over and over again.
DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS ALRIGHT.
There are still many many many things to work on!
Articulation, balance, intonation etc...
Seriously, time is running short!

We believe you guys have the capability to do even better!
We have faith in all of you :D
Let's all work hard together as a band,
to achieve a medal that all of us want!
